Employment: Prerequisites

PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION PACKAGE BEFORE YOU COMPLETE YOUR APPLICATION.

This page has been developed to inform you of our expectations and what you as an employee can expect of us if you start work at AiMHi.

The hiring procedure steps are explained in detail.

If you're interested in more information, brochures are available at the Main Office describing the many services AiMHi provides.

AiMHi - Prince George Association for Community Living

AiMHi is a fairly large organization with over 400 employees. AiMHi provides direct services to nearly double that number of people who have developmental disabilities.

Employment - For the Entry Level Employee

Working in a job providing direct services to people with disabilities demands a number of personal qualities, some which can be learned and some which you must already possess. The most important of these, and one which we demand from everyone, is that you must truly believe that people with disabilities are individuals with the same rights as any other person. This includes the right to dignity and respect and the right to live and work in their own community.

Expectations of Entry Level Employees

Ability to Read and Write

Report writing is required in all positions. Strong reading and writing skills are essential.

Capable of Lifting (Excluding office employees)

Those having conditions, which preclude them from lifting/supporting, will not be eligible for most positions. Proper lifting techniques will be taught to avoid injuries on the job.

Willing to Perform Personal Care

Many of the people for whom we provide services require assistance with personal care, such as eating, bathing, and toileting. Experience in providing personal care is desirable and a willingness to learn these skills is essential.

Willing to Work Shift Work

Many of the people we support require staff twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. As a new employee you will most likely be expected to work shifts.

Driver's Licence

All positions require posession of a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence.

Transportation

As you may work at various sites, and on various shifts during the week, reliable transportation is required for most positions. Proof of vehicle insurance will be required.

You must be willing to undergo a Criminal Record Search, secure a valid first aid certificate, have a T.B. test, secure a medical assessment form of good health, obtain a Food Safe certificate, produce a valid BC Driver’s License, current vehicle insurance, proof of English 12, and participate in an unpaid Pre-Employment Information which includes a four day Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training session, and sign an Oath of Confidentiality.  If successful, you will receive a Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training certificate.

Career Development Benefits

  1. Employment with AiMHi should be the beginning of a career rather than just a job
  2.

As your skills grow you may wish to apply for a position of greater responsibility and independence. These positions may also have the added attractions of more desirable working hours and a higher rate of pay. They also require the completion of Community And School Support (CASS) Certificate courses, which are available through the College of New Caledonia.

There is an ever-increasing demand for trained and experienced workers in all areas of the community social services throughout the Province.

  3. Employment with AiMHi can be a significant step in your own personal development

Work with AiMHi will help you to develop your organizational, decision-making and problem solving skills. You will learn to teach, to trouble-shoot and to work as part of a team.

You will go to concerts, to baseball games and car races, to dances, fairs, and other community events. There is lots of room for creativity and imagination. Housework and paperwork are part of the regular routine.

You will become a member of a team and will work with others toward the goal of supporting the people we serve to be contributing members of the community.

Salary and Benefits

  2. Salary as per BCGEU Collective Agreement.
  3. Municipal Pension Plan when eligible.

Relief Workers

New employees usually begin employment as "relief workers" and get a taste of our different work areas. As a relief worker, your name will be on our relief list and you will gain work according to your seniority placement on this list combined with your skills. Relief Workers are required to work different shifts at different locations and assist people with different needs. By working at different locations, the experience you gain will assist you, if you wish to apply for a regular position. As a Relief Worker, we cannot guarantee how many hours you will be assigned, but we can tell you that most Relief Workers work as many hours as they can handle. Regular positions are acquired by applying for the positions that are posted at each location.
